April 2016 - Wine of the Month
This month we take a look at the Tentación Tempranillo 2014 which is a 100% Tempranillo red wine from Bodegas y Viñedos Martíne-Corta (Rioja Denominación de Origen Calificada (DOCa), which is now produced by the fourth generation of a family devoted to the world of wine. Their wines come from 70 ha of their own vineyards located in La Rioja Alta.
Rioja wines have traditionally had a very good reputation and prestige, and are renowned all over the world. It is interesting to know that most of the territory subjected to the Rioja Protected Designation of Origin is located in La Rioja region, although their limits do not coincide exactly. There is a narrow strip in the left bank of the Ebro river lying in the southernmost part of Álava (Basque Country) which is also included in the Rioja wine region, as well as a number of vineyards actually located in the nearby region of Navarra. Thus, Rioja DOCa is further subdivided into three different zones: Rioja Alta, Rioja Baja and Rioja Alavesa, each one producing their own unique expression of Rioja wines. The Rioja Alta, which is the region that concerns us, is known for its "old world" style of wine: its higher elevation equates to a shorter growing season, which in turn produces brighter fruit flavours and a wine that is lighter on the palate.
The grapes used in the making of Tentación Tempranillo 2014 come from old vineyards (40 years old on average), located in the small village of Uruñuela, at 500 metres of altitude. They are selected and harvested by hand. Fermentation takes place using their own yeasts coming from the same vineyards. Although it lasts only 8 days, the maceration (the period of time during which the wine is kept in contact with the grape skins and seeds) is carried out for another 17 days in order to achieve the extraction of all the compounds contributing to the whole quality of the wine. The process finishes with the malolactic fermentation taking place in American and French oak barrels where the wine is also aged for 4 months.
The result is a beautiful cherry coloured robe, with a bright bluish rim. The nose is a sublime explosion of fruits, very fresh, reminding both red and wild fruits: cherries, strawberries, blackberries, blueberries, redcurrant, and slightly earthy and mineral in the background. A touch of fine wood is also found. Its palate is powerful and fruity: tannins are sweet, silky and flavourful, and the acidity is balanced. The finish is lavish, with a long persistence.
Over and above its suggestive label which surely will catch your eye, this wine is a nice and pleasant surprise for the senses and without a doubt will make you succumb to the temptation.
This wine pairs perfectly with cold meat, rice, pasta, legumes and roast or grilled meat.
